The parents of O'Grady have been Jim O'Grady who is a financial adviser and Jan O'Grady. Her family raised her by their parents in Wheaton within Illinois and graduated in 1981, with a degree from Wheaton-North High School. Prior to making the move into Los Angeles, she appeared in a variety of commercials. O'Grady started her career by modeling at Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She made her big screen debut in the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby, and then was cast in the regular role of ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. In addition, she guest-starred on a number of other shows and was a part of made for television and independent movies. Her debut role on television was that of Donna Abandando on the ABC police show NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the tall-haired team secretary of the ABC drama NYPD Blue from 1993 through 1996. Each year, she received Emmy Award nods for Outstanding actor in the Drama Series. In 1995, O'Grady won Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance in a Drama Series together with the ensemble.
